Welcome to the team page for Gary & The Knights! We are a unique blend of Helen Nelling’s lifelong friends and Doug Thaman’s North Side Community School team. While the North Side team didn't have the pleasure of knowing Gary personally, they are proud to walk alongside his family and friends to honor the legacy of a truly remarkable St. Louisan.
In Memory of Gary Nelling
We walk in honor of Gary, who passed away on January 19, 2021, after a brave seven-year battle with cancer. Gary was a man of immense talent and even greater spirit. A gifted architect who helped design Gateway One, a 50-year resident of University City, and a soulful musician who loved his guitar and banjo, Gary lived with an infectious joie de vivre.
Why We’re Stepping Up
Gary never met a stranger. Whether he was performing original songs or advocating for his community, his kindness and positivity left a lasting mark on everyone he met.
We are walking to support Helen, his wife of 39 years, their children, and grandchildren, while raising funds to provide hope for others facing cancer.

Join us for Cancer Support Community of Greater St. Louis' 28th annual Steps for Hope, and inspire others to celebrate hope, honor loved ones and join in community on Saturday, May 2, 2026! This year, we will gather at Creve Coeur Park to take Steps for Hope and extend support and compassion to those impacted by cancer in our community. Walkers and runners choose a 1 or 3.7 mile route at beautiful Creve Coeur Park! Proceeds from the event stay in the St. Louis area and fund Cancer Support Community of Greater St. Louis' programs, all of which are available at no charge to anyone impacted by cancer. When you take your own STEPS FOR HOPE you help share knowledge, community, and hope with individuals and families affected by cancer. Planning to attend on May 2nd?
